I Meditated With Horses - Here's What Happened | Sound Song & Horses Recap
By Toni-Ane Garland | Oct 22, 2026

On October 17th, 2026 Horses for HOPE partnered with Unbridled Horse Therapy and Mindful Path for a night of meditation. As soon as my feet touched the ranch grounds, something in me settled. My mind, usually buzzing with errands, deadlines, and responsibilities, finally quieted. The wide‑open acres stretched out in every direction, clearing space in my thoughts and pulling me fully into the present moment. I breathed in the fresh air and let the sounds of nature wash over me - the gentle trickle of pond water, the soft neighs of the horses, and the birds chirping from the treetops.

Now, I do not have a good history with meditation. My last meditation session was a 10-minute morning huddle where all the employees gathered together in a cold, gray, office. They asked me to close my eyes and relax, but all I could think about was the caseload of clients I needed to call to upsell our dental insurance plans. Yuck. This didn't work because the environment was all wrong. But this ranch filled with open sky, soft earth, and quiet was perfect for self-reflection.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mark, Marissa, and Shelly who have been doing great work to bring the healing power of horses to people of all backgrounds. Now, I know what you're thinking... so horses have some sort of magic that makes all your problems go away? Its not magic, its a science. Interacting with a horse can lower human heart rate and stress levels through heart rate synchronization. When people stand near or touch a horse, human heart rates and nervous system rhythms begin to match the horse's calmer pace.
Horses are incredible teachers when it comes to emotional regulation and boundaries. They don’t care about your words, status, or whatever stress you’re carrying. They respond to your energy. If you’re anxious or tense, they’ll pull away or mirror it. But when you relax your shoulders and breathe, they usually settle too. Seeing your emotions being reflected by the horse prompts you to reflect on your own emotions. When I approached a horse timidly, they also became shy. As the night went on and I began walking with more confidence, the horses did the same. They are great mirrors.

Horses teach us boundaries too. This part can feel uncomfortable, because none of us want to come across as rude or harsh. As a former people‑pleaser, I know that feeling all too well. But holding boundaries doesn’t make you a bad person. It’s simply being clear, and respectful of yourself and others without anger or force. Horses model this perfectly. If they don’t want to be bothered, they just walk away. No yelling or screaming like we usually do. They just remove themselves from the situation. Wouldn't that be great if we all just did that?
As the sun began to set, we gathered our blankets and settled in for meditation. Everyone laid back, eyes closed, letting the evening wrap around us. The singing bowls, chimes, and deep gong tones drifted through the air, each sound softening the nervous system a little more. Our vocalist, Jessa hummed and chanted gently, turning the already peaceful ranch into perfect serenity.

For the first time, I truly sat with myself. There wasn’t anyone guiding my thoughts or telling me what to focus on. No prompts, no instructions, no agenda. I just let my mind wander wherever it needed to go. Memories surfaced on their own. I drifted through moments of joy and let myself acknowledge the hurt I’ve carried too. I looked up to the night sky and lived in the moment. No thoughts of tomorrow. I was simply here on Earth existing, breathing, and finally allowing myself to just be.

Mediation is a viable tool for therapy that I recommend to everyone. If mediation under the stars, surrounded by nature and horses interests you, please consider joining our Horses for HOPE program for access to events like this.
And of course, this evening wouldn’t have been possible without our incredible partners. Unbridled Horse Therapy and Mindful Path bring so much intention, expertise, and heart to their work. I encourage you to check them out and learn more about the healing experiences they offer.
